In fairness to Ryan, it was Doug this time who brought up the aging issue, not the viewers! I don’t think it’s too much, once it’s raised in-episode, to wonder how it works.

Well, I can’t speak for everybody, but I don’t want everything explained to me. There are time, particularly in Trojan, where a lack of any explanation leads to interpretations so diverse that a little more detail would be nice, but I don’t think the (perceived) change in religions is asking for an absurd amount of exposition to back it up! I don’t think it’s out of line to hear a character speak about his parents’ religious beliefs in a way that doesn’t necessarily synch up with the religious beliefs we’ve heard him discuss earlier, and wonder how they fit together…which is all I’m doing. We can make them fit, sure, but whatever we do, we’re making them fit…and that’s why I didn’t bother going further down that rabbit hole.

Why do people want every single tiny thing explained to them. Rimmer’s parents changed religion, it’s not exactly unheard of. You’re not the only person I’ve seen complain about that, but seriously I don’t understand the problem. Would people have been happier if Rimmer spent a minute or two of the episode explaining… “Hey guys, I know that years ago I mentioned that my parents used to hop around the dinner table every Sunday, because of their religion – well they did, but when I was born they were Church of Judas. When I was a child they got the Bible I told you about, with the misprint, saw the error of their ways and so became Seventh Day Advent Hoppists. I just thought I should explain that… Aaaaanyway, shall we go talk to Jesus now?”

“Hey… and do you remember how I used to pretend to love Shakespeare? I couldn’t even get his name right! Do you remember? HAHAHA! Well, at some point over the last 10 years, floating around in deep space with nothing to do, I actually tried to read some of his work… turns out, I hate Shakespeare.”

At the start when they were talking about the shower that could revert organisms back to their physical peak, I was expecting a reference to Rimmer’s aging despite being a hologram.

Anyway, I really liked this episode. The walking back to Britian for some copper was the biggest laugh I’ve had in the new series.
