Reading too deeply into these things since 1981

Gordon Weston Shumway

A month or so ago there was a pretty interesting Facebook trend; folks would post an offer to create art of some kind to the first five people that “liked” their status, and then each of those five people would be obligated to post the same offer to their friends. Sure, it’s silly, but I also thought it was kind of neat. So neat that I posted it twice…for a total of ten people.

I wanted to share here the art I did, because while I went into it having no idea what to do, I thought at some point about ALF recreating famous scenes from the life of Christian Weston Chandler. And, well, once I got that idea in my head, there was nothing I could do but buy a pack of colored Sharpies and get to work.

This was hugely fun, and I hope you enjoy / are disturbed by what you are about to see. The deeper I got into this project the more I realized that ALF and Chris Chan have a lot in common, thematically speaking. But that’s a story for another day.

Sorry, meant to tell you that I had gotten my drawing – thanks! Life has been strange this week, and things have been falling by the wayside. :P

Props for doing that awkward Megan pic. You know what needs to be done now?

    “Tom girl” Alf.

…I think you may need an account at the Something Awful forums, if only to help you branch out into other internet trainwrecks. It’s absurd to confine yourself to Chris-Chan when the internet has so many other strange, broken people ruling their isolated online fiefdoms!

    Wow. Just… just wow.

I had no idea you were so interested in Chris-Chan’s life. I remember reading your article about “Ongoing Critiques” and reading the page about Sonichu, but DAMN, sir, you should really REALLY find another outlet for your obsession.

    Like… REALLY?! This poor guy?

Anyway, good use of medium. You really brought out what a sharpie is capable of in your work, though as a character study of ALF it is less successful than as a character study of CWC. Nonetheless, I am sure the recipints shall be pleased to receive their art.

    SERIOUSLY?! SONICHU DUDE?!?!?!

Oh I loooooove Sonichu. Seriously. I am endlessly fascinated by it. The temptation to deconstruct pieces of art and use that as a filter through which to learn deeper things about the creator than you could learn otherwise…to see the world through his or her eyes as nearly as possible…is something that interests me deeply. Sonichu, however, is so overt in its desire for you to do that — and to shape what you’ll find — that it comes off like the hand-drawn equivalent of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, and requires several levels of deconstruction.

Seriously, I’d love to write a long piece discussing an “issue” of Sonichu. I think it would be a very instructive process.

As far as ol’ CWC himself, I have to admit I’m not very deeply versed in his real life adventures. The above are pretty “famous” moments, and I don’t wish the guy any harm. I sent him a care package when his house caught fire, and I do hope he gets everything in order.

But the art? I am in love with his art endlessly. Sonichu 4 lyfe.
