The Lost Worlds of Power: Nearly There

Mega Man 2

So I know it’s been quiet on this front, but we are planning to post the finalized list of contents here on March 31. To be honest we’ll probably know slightly ahead of that date (and if we do we’ll be sure to contact each of the authors with the news rather than make them wait), but I don’t want to provide an unrealistic deadline again.

Updates can be found on this site’s Twitter feed, so be sure to follow that if you want to hear about me ripping my hair out because it’s impossible to whittle down the great submissions we’ve gotten to a reasonable number.

This puts us a month behind schedule in terms of the acceptance / rejection portion of our project, but overall we’re still on track for a spring release, I think. It’ll just be…late spring. I’ll post dates, of course, as soon as I know them, and am reasonably confident we can meet them.

I appreciate everybody’s patience. Mark my words: you will hear from us no later than March 31, at which point the formal announcement will be posted here as well.

I’m very excited about this. We have two stories left to read, and then we’re going to spend the rest of this month comparing notes and making our final decisions. It won’t be easy, and no matter what we do, a lot of great writing is going to get cut. So don’t take it personally if your story is not selected for inclusion; the competition was very fierce.

As far a second volume goes, that will be dependent on how well this one performs. If nobody downloads it, I can’t imagine it would be worth the effort to do another. If loads of people download it, it almost certainly would be. So if you do want to see another volume (and have another shot at inclusion) be sure to get your friends to grab a copy. It’s free, after all, and then they can be impressed by how many pages you managed to squeeze out of Hogan’s Alley.

Physical copies, again, more or less a given…but those won’t be free. I’ll sell them as inexpensively as possible, so that I can cover the cost of production, but that’s it. Anything you pay will be no more than I pay. Labors of love ftw!

So, yes. Stick around. As Bob Dylan once said, “Things should start to get interesting right about now.”

Only in this case it’s right about two weeks from now. Super sry. You’ll live.

Vega$: Into the Sunset I Will Ride

New Vegas

Well, I’m off to sunny Las Vegas, where the wine flows like prostitutes, and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve asked a few talented honchos to fill in for me while I’m gone, so Noiseless Chatter won’t be going dead, and you should still check back, because these guys know more than I do, and one of them wants to talk about math or something.

You should follow my new-ish Twitter feed if you aren’t already doing so…I’ll try to keep posting things there and sending pictures and stuff because hot damn, baby, I have always wanted to go to Vegas and this is going to be GREAT. I heard there’s a neon light there somewhere and I’d really like to see it.

There will still be a new ALF review on Thursday, but I won’t be around to fix all the typos I missed before it went live. There shouldn’t be too much of a drop off in activity here, mainly because I never post all that much in the first place. Yes, it’s now that my laziness will truly pay off.

Also, regarding The Lost Worlds of Power: as I’ve mentioned, we got…well, let’s just say we got a lot more in the way of submissions than we expected. Originally I had wanted to reply to everybody by the end of this month…but that’s not going to happen. I’m only about 1/3 of the way through them, but I’m hoping I can pick up the pace a bit in March and be done before April. I apologize for the delay, and I know everybody’s excited to hear the results and which pieces they can look forward to reading in the finished anthology, but I want to make sure I take the time to evaluate every submission thoroughly and respectfully, so your patience is appreciated!

Anyway, I’ve got a travel toothbrush, prescription sunglasses and a bag full of Hawaiian shirts. I’ll see you in just over a week.

The Lost Worlds of Power: Submissions Closed!

Super Mario Bros. 2

…aaaand we’re done! The submission period for the Lost Worlds of Power fiction anthology is officially at an end. If you’re reading this and you haven’t submitted your finished piece — or haven’t arranged a deadline extension, as a handful of folks have — you’re too late.

I’d love to keep the submission window open, but the fact is that we have to close it sometime, and this brings us one step closer to actually, you know, having a book you can read.

If you have submitted something and not heard back from me, let me know in the comments below. Be sure to enter an email address you actually check; it won’t be published, but that’s how I’ll get in touch. As of now, I’ve replied to every story I’ve received. If you didn’t get a reply, I didn’t get it, so let me know!

The next step for us is to work our way through the submissions and decide which ones will be included in the final volume. We got a lot more submissions than expected, so while we’re hoping to have definite answers by the end of this month, please be patient. Some of them are quite long and we want to make sure we have the time to give everything respectful consideration. Of course, the ones I’ve read so far are also quite good, so I think it’s safe to say that whatever the final volume looks like, it’s going to be incredible.

The next step for you is simply to stay tuned! Everybody will get a personalized email informing them of whether or not their story has been selected for inclusion, and any announcements will be posted here on Noiseless Chatter as well. So stick around, read about some ALF, and sit tight.

Thank you, as always, for your interest. Everybody. Whether you submitted a story, shared and circulated the information about it, wrote about it on your own website, or even just thought, “Huh. Sounds neat,” and figured you’d just wait and read the final book: thank you.

Again, more info to come as soon as possible. The cover art is looking great so far, and physical copies seem like more or less a sure thing at this point. As always, The Lost Worlds of Power will be available in eBook form for no charge. And from what I’ve read so far, it will absolutely be worth your time.

All the best, and you’ll be hearing from us soon!

The Lost Worlds of Power Submissions Due Friday! (-ish)

Worlds of Power: Metal Gear

We’re down to a matter of days, now! So far we’ve had some great submissions, and we expect even more as the deadline approaches.

Since the deadline is Friday the 31st, I’ve decided to keep submissions open until midnight on Sunday, February 2. Closing the submission window right before a nice, meaty weekend of revision time just didn’t feel right, so congratulations…you’ve got yourself another 48 hours to craft one hell of a terrible video game novelization.

Read the rules here, and get to work! If the submissions so far are any indication, you’ll be in great company. And stay tuned here…because we should have lots of news relatively soon, including the grand reveal of our final cover.

As well as info on physical copies. PHYSICAL COPIES? YES I SAID THAT

If you still haven’t started your submission, don’t fret. The Worlds of Power series practically cries out for a half-assed rushjob. Just think about which NES game you’d like to novelize, and then mishandle it as thoroughly as possible.

Updates to come. If you have submitted something to me and have not heard back…then I didn’t get it! I’ve replied to every submission so far to confirm receipt. If you didn’t hear back from me, get in touch! Email, comment below, anything. But let me know, because that means it never made it to me!

Good luck, everyone!

Reminder: The Lost Worlds of Power Deadline is Jan. 31! (Plus Site Updates…)

The Lost Worlds of Power

Friends, Hyrulians, Donkey Kong Countrymen…the deadline to get your Lost Worlds of Power submission in is fast approaching! You have until Friday the 31st, which is just under a month from now!

That might sound like bad news if you haven’t started writing yours, but don’t worry! The original Worlds of Power authors could have cranked out dozens of them in that time.

For the complete rules and guidlines for producing your deliberately awful literary adaptation of an NES game, refer to this post.

As of right now I’ve received a good number of submissions…and most of them are very strong contenders for inclusion. As of now I’m thinking we will select the best 10 for the anthology. That specific number is subject to change, but regardless, if you’d like to be considered (and I know you would!) be sure to email your submission to reed dot philipj at gmail dot com as soon as you can!

…and I shouldn’t be telling you this, but if you think you’d need another day or two to get your submission finished, well, shoot me an email and we’ll talk.

Anyway hurry! Your one and only shot at artistic immortality awaits!

Also, as you may have noticed, things look a little different around here. Here’s a list of what I done tinkered with…

– Simplified tagging system. Now only general categories and recurring features get tags. This still covers everything on the site, but it should make the tags more useful. (More specific searches can still be performed in the search bar at the top of the page.)

– Reduced the number of articles that pre-load on the main page from 10 to 5. This was done since I’ve been posting a lot of image-heavy stuff, and I want to be fair to folks on slow connections or on mobile devices.

– Updated lots of stuff on the backend that, in all honesty, should have been updated ages ago. This should help performance.

– Added Facebook widget to the sidebar so that social media luddites can still see what I’m posting there. You can also “like” the Facebook page there (and I’d appreciate it if you did!) without having the navigate to the page itself. COOL HUH.

These improvements came mainly from the feedback you provided me in my visitor’s survey last year. So…I’m not the fastest hen in the bunch, but I get there in the end. And please do let me know what other improvements you’d like to see. I’ll get to them. Eventually.
